SharmaGregg - Whether or not passengers are permitted to walk to the port depends on security concerns; my intuition says no, but you can call the port at the number listed above to ask directly. If you cannot walk, you can have the hotel arrange for a cab to take you to the terminal (two blocks shouldn't be an expensive ride and is likely your cheapest option), or you can look at SuperShuttle or other similar services. You can also call the cruise line to ask for their recommendations. Bon Voyage!
-- Contributed by: MayntzIt is my first cruise, and I will be staying at the continental Bayside which is two blocks from the port. They do not have shuttle service, is it possible to walk to the Port? If not what are my best options?
-- Contributed by: GreggMichael - The parking lot is within walking distance of the port terminal and ships, but it can be quite a hike so you'll want to arrive early for a nicer parking spot. To keep your luggage from getting lost, you can opt to bring it onboard yourself for some ships (not sure if the Port of Miami or the Carnival Triumph allows this -- you can call 1-800-CARNIVAL to check), but you will have to carry it around the ship until your cabin is ready. Also, when you get your cruise tickets (about a month before you sail), there will be colored luggage tags with them -- use those tags to identify your luggage, and fill out the information very carefully and legibly. One thing on the tags will be your cabin number; this is very important.
As you arrive at the port, you can give your luggage to a porter but note that they are not Carnival employees and Carnival is not responsible should something happen to your luggage. The porters then turn the bags over so they can be loaded onto the ship, and it can be several hours before you get your luggage. In general it's not a problem, but luggage is lost on occasion, just like with the airlines, but you usually do get it back in good time. Be sure to pack essential items in a small carry on anyway, and you shouldn't have a problem. Bon voyage!
