I do costuming on American and Australian cruise liners. This job is very specific as you need to adapt to working with numerous theatrical numbers rather than an individual show theme. The costumes are never replaced after a contract is over (unless it's a new production) so you need to know how to alter costumes in a reversable fashion i.e, sewn to allow items to be let in/out many times during their life to fit different sized bodies. You also need to be fast as "changeover" occurs while the new cast is onboard to replace those at end of their contract. Costumes need to be fitted as the previous cast has completed each performance. Mostly passengers do not know about the cast changeover and costumes are carried through crew areas. You will alter over 1000 items of clothing, hats and props and your cabin can become very cramped if you are too slow. Your work is nearly always completed in your cabin unless the ship has a specific work area for that purpose. You either have a cabin to yourself or share with another costumier of the same gender. Once costumes have been altered, you need to sit through costume runs and rehearsals. This occurs late at night or on port days when few passengers stay onboard. Sometimes a fitting finishes at 1.30 am and a rehearsal is at 9.oo that same morning. It is definately not a job for home sewers or those who know nothing about theatre. I enjoy this work, I have worked in film, opera, theatre and tv. This type of work is by far the best as it combines theatre with adventure and travel - I would definately rate this as one of my top "obscure jobs". If you work well, you get time off to sightsee. I have been on many travels and got to know the staff on many ships as they interchange between ships/companies. As for finding employment, costumiers are nearly always employed by entertainment companies that have a connection with a costume department or costume maker. It is an extremely hard position to get but once in, you can be assured that more ship contracts will come. As for time out at sea - a change over show usually lasts one cruise (10 -12 days and can be as long as three weeks. It may be in Brazil, Rome or Tahiti or anywhere else the ship may be sailing at time of show changeover. Sometimes you do two ships back to back and in different cruise destinations so travel is a bit part of your work. Other times you may do costuming in one place when no passengers are onboard i.e during dry dock or wet dock. As for pay, I find the pay is well above land rates. Other than that you get great perks such as flights to different destinations that may include hotel stays before embarking on your ship. You may be logged on the ship as a crew member or as a passenger, sometimes you have the best of both worlds and can use crew and passenger facilities. My advice is if applying for costuming positions, know a lot about theatre shows, both period and modern costume design, have an awareness of extreme body movements in regards to costume fit and be able to work well with creative people under pressure. Sometimes you may have to work through rough seas so if you suffer motion sickness this is definately not a job for you.

Akshy - A cruise ship job is very different than Coast Guard patrol; cruise ships are more related to the travel, hospitality, entertainment, and customer service industries, though I'm sure your Coast Guard service would make an outstanding point on your resume.

I just recently got out of the U.S Coast Guard. I have 2.5 years of experience on a U.S.C.G ship.
