What Family Cabins on Cruises Are

Standard cruise ship cabins, which are the definite majority are similar to traditional hotel rooms. However, they are often more cramped due to limited space allowed in a cruise ship environment. Cabins that sleep four usually have two lower beds and two loft beds that sit over them, attached to the wall. The bathrooms are usually very tiny and have a shower with no tub.

In contrast, family cabins provide additional space and often more bathrooms and beds. They also can provide more privacy for parents while still keeping them close to their kids.

Finding Family Cabins on Cruises

There are several cruise lines that currently offer family cabins. They include:

  • Carnival Cruises – This line has family staterooms with features like floor to ceiling windows and 230 square feet of space. They are available on the Conquest, Glory, Valor and Liberty ships.
  • Disney Cruises – The Disney deluxe family staterooms have two bathrooms per room. One has a sink and a bathtub and the second has a toilet and a sink. They also have curtains that can segment the room, so parents can stay up without disturbing sleeping children. Staterooms are not available on the ships Magic and Wonder.
  • Celebrity Cruises – Has family ocean view staterooms on three of its ships: the Infinity, Constellation and Millennium. These rooms have 271 square feet. Each room has two full size pull-out beds as well as two queen size beds. They also have verandas and partitions.
  • Princess Cruises – Offers family suites on its Caribbean, Sapphire, Golden, Grand, Star and Diamond ships. These suites have at least 500 square feet of space. They are essentially the size of two conjoined staterooms.
  • Norwegian Cruises – The ship called the Pride of America has family suites equipped with a den, living room and a bedroom. These cabins sleep five and have 335 square feet of room. Kids will also love that there are two TVs, so there’s no fighting over what to watch.

Alternatives to Family Cabins on Cruises

People that can’t find family cabins or whose families are too large to sleep comfortably in just one room may want to consider getting two adjoining cabins. Often, like traditional hotel rooms, they have a connecting door that can be unlocked to allow people to travel between the two cabins without going into the hall. This option allows families to travel on any cruise ship they like. In some cases, it may even be less expensive than booking one larger cabin.

Considerations

Before booking a cabin on a cruise, it’s important to ensure that it's family friendly not only from a room standpoint but from a safety standpoint as well. This is especially important if the cabin has a balcony. Before making the reservation, it’s good to ask how high the barrier on the balcony is and also if the door has a lock that children cannot reach.

Also, after checking in, it’s imperative to search for potential hazards, such as exposed electrical outlets and any pinching or choking hazards. It’s also not recommended to leave children in the staterooms unattended, even if it is for a short period of time. Most ships offer children’s activities in which they can participate in without their parents' presence. This supervision is provided to allow for much needed alone time.
