About Disney Magic

On July 30, 1998, Disney Cruise Line set sail its first cruise ship, the Disney Magic. Designed to combine the past with the present, the ship resembles a classic ocean liner on the outside and a modern holiday resort on the inside.

Built at the Fincantieri Shipyards in Italy, Disney Magic measures 964 feet long and includes a maximum width of 106 feet. It cruises at a steady 21.5 knots; and with 875 staterooms, it can accommodate 2,400 passengers at a time. Its home is Port Canaveral, Florida, while its ports of call are in the eastern and western Caribbean. Beginning in 2010, the ship will embark on a season of limited itineraries that will take guests to Northern Europe and the Mediterranean.

Captivating Art

For the cruise Disney Magic, reviews will undoubtedly comment on the decor. As you can imagine, Disney creations are found throughout the ship, from costumed characters to framed collectible cells of classic Disney animation. The design of the interior however is actually Art deco, a right complement to the expected Disney flair. The unexpected mix should enchant all members of the family.

Plan a Cruise: Disney Magic Reviews

Before booking your trip, it is always a good idea to do some research, and reading reviews is a great way to weigh the pros and cons of any purchase. Disney Magic can be magical for a family, but perhaps not as enjoyable for a couple without kids. Also, if you’re not a fan of the Magic Kingdom, the cruise might be overwhelming with all of its Disney tie-ins.

  1. Cruise Critic: This comprehensive review truly takes you inside the ship, with individual reviews on dining options, public rooms, cabins, entertainment, spa and fitness, and things to do for the family and children. The four-star review also offers tips.
  2. CruiseMates: Read about the onboard experience of Disney Magic, from the rotating restaurants to the mini-suite staterooms. A concise review, the verdict is 4 ½ stars out of 5.
  3. LoveToKnow: Learn about the Disney Cruise Line in general, with helpful info on both Disney Magic and Disney Wonder. Pointing out a few cons, the review is again positive.

Reader’s Polls

In addition, though not detailed reviews, reader’s polls can be just as helpful, telling you what a majority think. In the case of Disney Magic and Disney Cruise Line, the response is overwhelmingly positive.

In Conde Nast Traveler magazine’s ninth annual “Reader’s Cruise Poll,” Disney Magic scored a Top 5 in the Large Cruise Ship category with an overall rating of 85.9 (only 2.5 points from the top spot, held by Disney Wonder). The poll reflected the opinions of 90,000 readers. In three of the categories, Disney Magic rated 90 or better:

  • Crew and service
  • Activities and facilities
  • Design and layout

Meanwhile, in Travel + Leisure magazine, the cruise ship was again recognized among the best. On T+L’s “2008 World’s Best” list, Disney Cruise Line was third in the “Large Ship” category – one spot higher than the year before.

On board, it's undeniably Disney.

Is It Magical for You?

Reviews are definitely a good place to start when choosing a cruise. What you’ll want to look for is a consensus and in the case of Disney Magic, it seems quite clear that the majority is in favor of what Mickey Mouse and his friends have come up with. Perhaps you’ll feel the same?

Something New

Should you be inclined to take a vacation on board a Disney Cruise Line ship, it might be the start of something new. Keep in mind, too, that soon two more ships will be added to the fleet: Disney Dream (2011) and Disney Fantasy (2012). Both promise to offer more of the same.
