Costa Mediterranean Cruises

From LoveToKnow Cruises

Costa Mediterranean Cruises, officially Costa Cruises, is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Carnival Cruise Corporation. Like Carnival's many other divisions, such as Holland America Line and Seabourn Cruise Line, Costa is run independently and has its own flavor and style -- Italian style.

Ships

Costa Mediterranean Cruises has eleven ships, ranging from sparkling newly constructed megaships to refitted, yet comfortable ships acquired from other cruise lines. Below are the ships with the year they entered service.

  • Costa Allegra -- 1992
  • Costa Atlantica -- 2000
  • Costa Classica -- 1991
  • Costa Europa -- 1986
  • Costa Fortuna -- 2003
  • Costa Magica -- 2004
  • Costa Marina -- 1969
  • Costa Mediterranea -- 2003
  • Costa Romantica -- 1993
  • Costa Tropicale -- 1982
  • Costa Victoria -- 1996

All of the ships are easily recognizable by their bright yellow smokestack, the symbol of the cruise line. Another common denominator on all of the ships is Costa's theme of "Cruising Italian Style." To that end, all ships feature delicious Italian cuisine accompanied by affordable Italian wines, with pasta and veal offered every night, a predominantly Italian staff and crew, and sleek Italian design and art.

Itineraries

Costa Cruises sails throughout the Caribbean and throughout Europe. Caribbean itineraries include seven-night Western and Eastern itineraries from South Florida as well as seven-night Southern Caribbean itineraries from San Juan, Puerto Rico.

European Cruises feature Western Mediterranean cruises from Piraeus and/or Genoa, Eastern Mediterranean cruises from Barcelona and/or Genoa, and Baltic Capitals cruises, which sail to St. Petersburg in Russia, Stockholm, Copenhagen, and Amsterdam.

Other Costa Cruises itineraries include South American sailings, such as the CostaVictoria's cruise along the Brazilian coastline. Periodic "repositioning" cruises are also offered, that is cruises which take a ship from one part of the world to another, such as a transatlantic voyage. Such cruises are often very good values.

Life onboard Costa Mediterranean Cruises

Costa Cruises ships are geared towards a young, active crowd. The ships draw a primarily North American clientele on Caribbean itineraries and a primarily European clientele on European ones. The ships boast sleek public rooms, filled with modern Italian art. Most ships have a large state-of-the-art spa as well as multiple lounges and retail shops.

Staterooms vary from well-appointed, but relatively small inside cabins to roomy outside cabins with large picture windows. Most Costa Cruise ships have teak wooden built-in furniture throughout the passenger cabins. The newer ships boast many cabins with private balconies, some of the largest such accommodations afloat.

Dining on Costa Cruises follows the traditional two-seating system, with casual options also offered for breakfast and lunch. The cuisine, as expected, is Italian, with an emphasis on pasta with a variety of sauces, antipasto, and veal dishes. The wines are generally affordable and pleasing, and the service is excellent, in the Italian tradition.

Costa Mediterranean Cruises for Families

Costa Cruises offers an organized children's program on all of their ships for kids from 2 to 19, in four age-group categories. The programs run from morning thru dinner time and feature such amenities as special kids shore excursions, special kids meals, a video arcade, a teen "disco," and theme evenings, such as a talent show and karaoke night.

Comments

Ron - Generally, boarding begins several hours before departure (probably at least at 5 p.m.), though for a repositioning cruise the schedule may be somewhat different and boarding could begin even earlier. I'd suggest contacting the cruise line directly and asking a representative about your specific voyage. Bon Voyage!
