Carnival Cruise Logo
From LoveToKnow Cruises
The Carnival Cruise logo is one of the industry’s most recognizable icons, but there is more to choosing a good logo than just finding a symbol to put on merchandise.
The Importance of Logos
Logos are an essential part of any business. That simple, easily recognizable icon helps customers identify the brand and come to associate it with the quality and service they desire. For cruise lines, an appropriate logo will show customers the value of the line and inspire repeat travelers and multiple cruise vacations. Logos can be used in a multitude of ways, from adorning merchandise and tickets to being an integral part of the ship’s décor, and no cruise line has a more recognizable logo than Carnival Cruise Line.
About the Carnival Cruise Logo
The Carnival logo is a simple reverse C character, with a white reverse C framed with blue on the concave (left) side and red on the convex (right) side. Together, the colors and design form a vertical rectangle that is easy to put on many different merchandise items and to use in many different ways.
The legend of the Carnival Cruise logo is that it was initially sketched on a napkin, and that simple doodle has become the icon for the world’s most successful and most popular cruise line, with more than 20 ships hosting more than 3.5 million passengers each year. While the true origins of the logo may be lost to the sea after Carnival’s more than 35 years of offering outstanding cruises, the simplicity of its creation perfectly symbolizes the simple concept behind every Carnival cruise: a cruise vacation is meant to be fun.
Psychology
Despite the simplicity of the Carnival Cruise logo, there is intricate subtle psychology at play in the design. The bold red, white, and blue colors are easy to see and evoke a sense of patriotism, pride, and comfort with their primary hues. The curve of the logo is reminiscent of a standard C, appropriately enough, for Carnival, and the curve is also representative of a smooth wave. Together, these very simple designs create a very powerful logo.
Merchandising
The Carnival logo can be found on a wide range of merchandise and souvenirs, from t-shirts and other attire to photograph albums and frames, keychains, beach towels, books, pens, mugs, shot glasses, and other novelties. The logo is also a part of Carnival’s cruise ship ID cards, which is useful in foreign ports of call to help security agents ensure that passengers are entering the proper terminal. The logo is also found on each ship’s daily newsletter offering cruise ship tips and a daily itinerary of different cruise activities, lectures, shows, and other information.
Even the ships themselves sport the familiar logo, and not just as part of the name or hull design. The line’s distinctive split funnels are decorated in a modified logo with red, white, and blue colors highlighting the world-famous reverse C.
Other Carnival Cruise Line Branding Techniques
Even a powerful, well-designed logo cannot be the only branding technique a successful company uses. In addition to its recognizable logo, the Carnival Corporation also uses the tag line “The Fun Ships” for its outstanding fleet, emphasizing the fun amenities and activities available for the whole family. The on board water slides, hilarious games including the belly flop, newlywed, scavenger hunt, and hairy chest contests, superior children’s programs, and other elements of the cruise experience add up to outrageous fun on every Carnival cruise.
Advertising campaigns also add to a company’s image and branding, and many cruise lines use similar commercials, promotional materials, and other advertisements to promote their vacations. One of Carnival’s most successful campaigns was the “Million Ways to Have Fun” program that ran with commercials, billboards, slogans, and other advertising for several years and is still popular today.
Other Cruise Line Logos
The Carnival Cruise line logo is immediately recognizable, but other cruise lines also use distinctive logos that experienced cruise passengers can immediately recognize. The most prominent cruise logos today include:
- Royal Caribbean Cruises: The white crown and anchor design immediately demonstrates the royal treatment passengers can expect.
- Celebrity Cruises: The bold white X that forms the Celebrity Cruise logo highlights the e”X”ellent treatment the line is famous for.
- Norwegian Cruise Line: The simple letters “NCL” floating atop gentle waves are a prominent feature of Norwegian Cruises.
- Princess Cruises: The woman’s profile with flowing hair turning into waves evokes the romance and elegance of this Love Boat cruise line.
- Disney Cruise Line: Nothing is a more perfect logo for Disney Cruises than the popular mouse ears backed by waves that bring the famous Disney magic to sea.
The Carnival Cruise logo is one of the industry’s most recognizable icons, and since the line first set sail in 1972 it has been backing up that logo with a reputation for fun, affordability, and enjoyment, no matter what the cruise destination.
